This is a continuation of the previous post looking at the making of Main Masts and Spars which can be found Here.
With all the sanding and prep work completed it’s time to get the spar secured between centres so I can rotate it when it’s in the spray varnish process. I apply 8 thinned spray coats of oil based varnish , left to cure before rubbing down with 240 grit paper. Then it’s the final 6 top coats of varnish sprayed in a ‘wet on wet‘ format followed by 4 days to cure before removing and placing onto a trestle.
As I’ve mentioned prior this mast is destined for the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland.
Another successful project, one of many for us at Just Lugger Joinery
All my spars are made from Canadian Douglas Fir, the grade being ‘Clear and Better’, this becomes evident when you look at the long straight grain and the lack of blemishes.
It’s a material that is a little more expensive and heavier than Spruce but does not suffer from the well known rot to the open grain and especially at the foot of the mast which sits on the keel block.
The masts are made to the standard 16ft 1inch, (4906mm) and of a section of 68mm.
The Button Pin is formed to take our mast head bands of 58mm and supplied with the mast, however this dimension is common with most of the original galvanised bands.
We fit a 70 x12.5mm sheave supported on its stainless steel spindle this covered on the outside by retaining caps. There are 2 sheaves fitted to our masts and they come with our own mast head band.
The Standard Masts are made to the standard 16ft 1inch, (4906mm) and of a section of 68mm.
The standard Mast cost as detailed above is ………………………………£480. 00
To have it full prepped and spray finished this additional cost will be …….£98.00
The Longboat Cruiser mast is 5085mm in length.
It has a base that fits into a standard Tabernacle of 80×75 mm, however we can make this base to fit your existing fitting.
The cost of this mast is……………………………£685
To have it fully spray varnished finish this additional cost is………………….£125
The delivery, packing and VAT is in addition on both masts.
