This joinery work was carried out at Dragon Design over the winter of 2025 and fitted back into Lugger Jojo the first week of July 2026 at my Nidri base.

Jojo was originally purchased from the owner on The Isle of Man in January 2012. I brought her back to Tredegar and she was totally resprayed and fitted out that winter to be then towed out to the South Ionian Sea that April.

So with being chartered each summer and in the water for almost 4 months it is inevitable that the sun, sea and wind takes its toll on the joinery and fittings. After each charter I wash the cockpit off in clean water and give the joinery a re-oil etc, but over time it deteriorates and requires a total refurb. This can only be done at my workshop at Tredegar. The second picture shows the lack of colour in the sun-bleached Gunwale rails.

These hatch covers were originally made by myself 14 years ago and fitted to Jojo before she was towed out to the South Ionian Sea. Great quality work undertaken by Just Lugger Joinery&more.

With the hull power washed and floor repainted it’s time to get the refit done. The originally made flooring of 2012 has been washed and returned to be painted with its customary non-slip surface application.

In the shade of a tree for cover I make an early morning start on the refit work. With each hatch identified I’m able to quickly refit the hatch frames and then caulk in the perimeter where the frames come in contact with the gel coat of the cockpit. I have also added a new main mast thwart for this 1998 Mk 3 Lugger, the anchor positioning shoes snuggly fitting and supporting the anchors.

The Gunwale rail needed a light sand back and then scrubbing with a Teak Cleaner which has a certain amount of bleach in it. This dissolves the black / blue stains that naturally occur in Iroko as a result of contact with salt water.
It’s being refinished in Rustin’s Danish oil which will be an ongoing process over the next couple of weeks in order to get a high level of penetration and build.
Certainly a good start from what it was in October 2025.

So here we are, all completed and ready to charter.
The next urgent job will be removing and fitting an engine mounting bracket.

There are not many Drascombe boat owners out there that has not seen this typical horizontal splitting in the engine mounting bracket grain. Follow taking it off and refitting a new JLJ bracket with supporting ply strengtheners to the inside of the glassfibre moulding later in July.
